In news: Campi Flegrei Supervolcano

  • A 4.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Italy’s Campi Flegrei super volcano, with Pozzuoli as its epicentre. The tremor was felt as far as Naples, and it was the strongest in 40 years.

About Campi Flegrei Volcano.

  • Campi Flegrei, commonly known as the Phlegraean Fields, is a huge volcanic region in the western suburbs of Naples, Italy.
  • It is one of the world’s most active volcanic systems, with activity dating back at least 50,000 years.

Its Volcanic System:

  • Campi Flegrei is located in southern Italy’s Campanian volcanic arc, which extends from Naples to the Gulf of Pozzuoli.
  • Geological Formation: The volcanic system of Campi Flegrei is distinguished by a massive caldera, a collapsed volcanic crater surrounded by multiple volcanic vents, craters, and lava domes. The caldera has a diameter of approximately 13 kilometres (8 miles).
  • Volcanic Activity: Campi Flegrei is classified as a supervolcano owing to its magnitude and potential for massive eruptions. It has had several periods of volcanic activity throughout its history, including explosive eruptions, lava flows, and phreatic (steam-driven) eruptions.
  • Craters, fumaroles (steam vents), mud pots, and hot springs are among the volcanic characteristics that define the Campi Flegrei terrain.
