700 One Stop Centres will be put up over India

  • In an important step towards women’s safety and empowerment, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development recently announced the creation of One Stop Centres (OSCs) in over 700 districts across the country.

About

  • Central Sponsorship: The One Stop Centre initiative is a centrally sponsored scheme designed by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).
  • Inception: The plan has been in existence since April 1, 2015, with a primary focus on combating gender-based violence.
  • Universal Reach: The One Stop Centre Scheme is committed to assisting all women who have experienced abuse, including girls under the age of 18. Regardless of caste, class, religion, region, sexual orientation, or marital status, all women are eligible for assistance.
  • Protection for Minors: For girls under the age of 18, the plan works with institutions and agencies created under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act of 2000 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012.

Objectives of the One-Stop Centre Scheme

  • Holistic Support: The primary goal is to provide complete and integrated support to women who have experienced abuse, whether in private or public settings. All aid is conveniently located under one roof.
  • instant Access: These centres provide instant access to a variety of services, including medical, legal, psychiatric, and counselling support. This unified approach is resolutely opposed to all types of violence against women.

Funding and Administration

  • The Scheme is funded by the Nirbhaya Fund, with the Central Government giving full financial support.
  • Local Administration: The District Collector/District Magistrate is responsible for day-to-day implementation and administration.
