Nilgiri Tahr Conservation Project

  • The Tamil Nadu government launched a conservation initiative for the Nilgiri Tahr, the state animal. Conservation of the Nilgiri Tahr
  • The Nilgiri Tahr project aims to improve understanding of the Nilgiri Tahr population through surveys and radio telemetry studies, as well as reintroduce the Tahrs to their historical habitat, address immediate threats, and raise public awareness of the species.
  • The project will be carried out between 2022 and 2027.
  • Furthermore, October 7 will be designated as ‘Niligiri Tahr Day’ in honor of E.R.C. Davidar, who pioneered one of the first studies of the species in 1975.

Historic significance of Nilgiri Tahr

  • The Nilgiri Tahr has been mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature for over 2,000 years.
  • The late Mesolithic (10,000-4,000 BC) paintings emphasize the Tahr’s importance in folklore, culture, and life.
  • It was named the State Animal in honor of its ecological and cultural importance.
