Google and Microsoft have incorporated generative AI into their search engines and browsers, as well as user products like Gmail, Docs, Copilot 365, Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and others.

What is Generative AI?

  • Generative AI, like other types of artificial intelligence, learns how to behave based on past data.
  • Instead of simply categorizing or identifying data, it generates entirely new content based on that training – a text, a picture, or even computer code.
  • ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI and launched late last year, is the most well-known generative AI application.
  • Because it takes in a text prompt and produces a human-like answer, the AI powering it is known as a large language model.

Generative AI products offered by Google and Microsoft

  • Google and Microsoft have incorporated generative AI into their search engines and browsers, as well as user products like Gmail, Docs, Copilot 365, Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and others.
  • In Google’s Gmail and Docs, generative AI can assist users in writing documents autonomously, such as an employee welcome email.
  • Depending on the subject, Copilot 365, a feature of Microsoft 365 apps, can generate spreadsheets on command or even write a complete article in Word.
  • Both Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are incorporating generative AI platforms and models into their cloud products.

What do Google and Microsoft have to offer?

  • Generative AI will assist users in writing papers automatically in Google’s Gmail and Docs.
  • Instead of typing out the document, an HR executive can simply ask the AI app to compose a welcome email for workers.
  • Microsoft, too, has ‘Copilot 365’ for its Microsoft 365 applications, which include Teams, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • In this case, AI could create a spreadsheet on command or even write a complete article on Word. (depending on the topic).
  • Copilot can also match Calendar entries with emails to produce quick, helpful pointers on what a person should concentrate on in meetings.

How will these changes affect the human workforce?

  • Despite its popularity, the technology is presently not very accurate and frequently provides incorrect responses.
  • Google and Microsoft were found to provide inaccurate answers during the initial demonstrations of these products.
  • While these goods are useful, they are not yet capable of completely replacing humans in the workplace.
  • Humans are better equipped to verify AI-generated data.

Various challenges posed

  • Bias: The data used to teach generative AI systems can be skewed, resulting in skewed outputs.
  • Misinformation: Because generative AI systems learn from the internet or training data that may be inaccurate, they may contribute to the dissemination of misinformation online.
  • Security: Deepfakes and other forms of digital manipulation created by generative AI systems could be used to spread disinformation or conduct fraud.
  • There are ethical concerns about the use of generative AI, especially in terms of privacy, accountability, and transparency.
  • Regulation: Regulatory frameworks are required to guarantee that generative AI is used responsibly and ethically, and that it has no negative effects on society.
