The Performance Grading Index (PGI) for 2021-22 has been issued

  • The Union government’s annual Performance Grading Index (PGI) rates the performance of States and Union Territories in school education for the school year 2021-22.
  • While Chandigarh and Punjab came out on top, none of the states or UTs received the highest grade, Daksh, showing that there is space for development across the board.

PGI (Performance Grading Index)

  • The Performance Grading Index (PGI) is a tool that provides insights on the state of school education in states and UTs, highlighting major performance levers and critical areas for improvement.
  • The PGI was created by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) to stimulate transformational change in the field of school education.

Key PGI Learning Outcomes Parameters

  • Evaluating pupils’ achievement in disciplines like language, math, science, and social science.
  • Evaluating net enrolment ratios, retention rates, educational level transitions, and mainstreaming of out-of-school children.
  • Infrastructure: Investigating the presence of scientific laboratories, computer labs, book banks, vocational education subjects, mid-day food supply, effective drinking water facilities, and uniform and free textbook distribution.
  • Equity: Taking into account the performance disparity between marginalised communities and the general category, as well as the provision of inclusive infrastructure such as ramps and disabled-friendly restrooms.
  • Assessing digital attendance data, the presence of single-teacher primary schools, vacancies in educational positions, inspections, and teacher evaluations.

PGI Ratings and Grades

  • Daksh: The highest grade in the PGI, with a score of more than 940 out of 1,000.
  • Akanshi-3: The lowest grade, with scores ranging from 0 to 460.
  • Top Performers: Chandigarh and Punjab received the sixth-highest grade, Prachesta-2, followed by Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, all of which received Prachesta-3.
  • Needs Improvement: Thirteen states were classified as Akanshi-1, including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, indicating significant space for improvement.

Domain-Wise Action for Improvement

The report emphasises that states can take particular activities in each domain to improve their overall PGI score.
